Welcome!
I’m Stuart J. Turnbull-Dugarte – I am an Associate Professor in Quantitative Political Science in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton. I am also a member of the Public Opinion Analytics Lab (POAL).
I received my PhD in Political Science in 2020 from the Quantitative Political Economy department at King’s College London.
Thanks to the generous support of the Leverhulme Trust, I am currently spending most of my time dedicated to completing a book, under contract with Princeton University Press, on “The Rainbow Vote: How LGBTQ voters think, what they want from politics, and how to win their vote”.
Generally, my research interests lay at the intersection of political sociology, comparative politics, and behavioural science. Some of my research has been enjoyed coverage on BBC News, the Financial Times, the New York Times and the Guardian. I teach in the areas of quantitative methods, political psychology, and comparative European politics.
Findings from my research have been published in, among other outlets, the American Political Science Review, the British Journal of Political Science, the European Journal of Political Research (x4), the European Journal of Public Policy (x5), the Journal of Politics (x5), Political Psychology, and Political Science Research & Method (x3). In 2023, my contributions to political science were recognised by the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) who awarded me their annual “Rising Star Award”.
In addition to my main role at Southampton, I am also an Associate Editor at Public Opinion Quarterly, the European Journal of Politics and Gender, and Research & Politics. I also serve on the diversity committee of the European Political Science Society.
I am very proudly a first gen student and I dedicate part of my time to mentoring other first gen students in their journey through university life. I am also very keen on normalising transparency on issues related to poor mental health in academia & talk about my own struggle with depression (#ihadablackdog), anxiety, and the Velvet Rage openly. If you are in need of support, I am readily available to talk.

When I am not teaching or wrangling data into a ggplot, you can normally find me either travelling, watching films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, listening to Bad Bunny, and/or drinking a flat white or tropical IPA
